Assertive behaviour in the workplace

CATEGORY

We probably don't know anyone who could never get off balance, who would never get angry, who would never lose their temper. Everything can be fought. Assertiveness is a very important skill, getting along with others is an ability in the workplace more than welcome - it is a great tool for conflict prevention and resolving unpleasant situations. We have written 7 points that can help improve assertive behaviour so that it does not look like a barn or some inferior inn in our workplaces.

1.    Opinion
Expressing one's own opinion is an extremely important matter. Accepting the opinion of others is at least as important. Many of us still have a huge problem with this, and kindergarten teachers are already teaching us that.

2.    RIP conflict resolution
It is not known why the greatest emphasis is still placed on conflict resolution. Why don't we go for it from the root and try to avoid conflict at all? Assertiveness is the recommended tool.

3.    Equivalence
It is the mainstay of assertiveness, its whole philosophy stands on it. Our opinions and relationships are equal, we respect each other, we treat each other equally in conflicts that have already arisen. This is what the kindergarten teacher taught us. Do you remember?

4.    Cooperation
It would probably be nice if all almost 8 billion people in the world were assertive. Nice idea, but we have to prepare for not everyone to work together. There are simply types of people looking for conflicts. Maybe you also got into a confrontation with colleagues. Given that the basic philosophy of assertiveness is to act equally, without one of the parties winning, it is not entirely fair to talk about assertiveness that you can win over such people. So we are not talking about victory, but how to lead by example. Let's set an example for them, maybe they will join us.

5.   Positive attitudeWith an interest not only in themselves, but also in colleagues, if an unpleasant situation arises, look for solutions to mutual satisfaction.

6.   Attention!
a) Sometimes there can be a fine line between assertive behaviour and submission.
b) Assertiveness does not mean that we cannot say no.

7.    Training
There are a number of assertive techniques that we can master through training. It is worth mentioning the broken gramophone record, when, just like it, we repeat our request several times. The point is that after a few repetitions, the opponent escapes the arguments and we reach our goal without any pressure. You can also learn other interesting techniques at the Assertiveness in the Workplace training.
