What are the new IATF interpretations?

The IATF Group has released the latest sanctioned interpretations on its website. Last IATF 16949: 2016 SI, number 20, which relates to requirement IATF 16949: 2016; 10.2.3 Troubleshooting, adds to the organization's documented problem-solving process (es) that it must (a) PREVENT RECURRENCE.

Many are puzzled by what this demand brings. Remedial action is nevertheless included in this requirement. According to ISO 9000: 2015 "Corrective action is a measure to eliminate the cause of non-compliance and prevent recurrence." Precautionary measures are already included in this requirement. According to ISO 9000: 2015 “A precautionary measure is a measure to eliminate the cause of a potential non-compliance or other potential adverse situation. "

Therefore, if the problem occurs again, it could mean that the effectiveness of the corrective action has not been properly assessed or that the action has not been taken for the real root cause.

Is it time to see if your troubleshooting process is robust?

  • Do you think that action is decided before the root cause of the problem is determined?
  • Does your team consist of representatives of different disciplines?
  • Do you lack a neutral coordinator in the team to ensure that the goal and thus the root cause and effective corrective action are achieved?
  • Do you use tools such as G8D, IS/IS NOT, ISHIKAWA and 5 Why in the process?
  • Does your organization refuse to implement preventive measures due to implementation costs?
  • Are you trying to find POKA-YOKE solutions?
  • Do you encounter a lack of interest and willingness in everyone from top to bottom to participate in solving problems?
  • Do you lack the involvement of top management?
  • Does this process include risk analysis (FMEA)?
  • Isn't this process perceived as just a paper affair for the customer or the auditor?

While there may be many reasons, many agree that the main cause of ineffective problem solving is, in fact, a lack of competence in problem-solving tools and techniques.
