What is Seiton?

Seiton, the second step in the 5S methodology, is translated as "Set in Order" in English. In the context of 5S, Seiton involves organizing the items that remain after the Seiri step (sorting and removing unnecessary items) into a structured and efficient system.

The goal of Seiton is to create a workplace where everything has a designated place and is kept in its proper location. This improves efficiency by reducing the time spent searching for tools and materials and facilitates the identification of missing or misplaced items. Additionally, Seiton can help minimize the risk of errors or accidents by ensuring that tools and equipment are stored correctly and identifying and mitigating hazards.

During the implementation of Seiton, organizations should consider the following steps:

• Determine the optimal location for each item: Consider frequency of use, easy access, and the need for proximity to other items.
• Labeling storage locations: Properly labeled storage areas can ensure items are returned to their correct places and aid in training new employees.
• Implement visual controls: Visual cues, such as color-coding or shadow boards, can make it easier to identify where items should be stored.
• Implement the First In, First Out (FIFO) system: To minimize waste and ensure items are used before their expiration dates, organizations can implement a FIFO system.
• Optimize workspace layouts: Optimize workspace layouts to minimize waste and maximize efficiency.
